Life on the Edge, a Racer's Diary

 Barber MOTO-ST Race

We finished 3rd today, our 7th straight podium finish in the GST class (going back to Road America last year). Add two wins in ASRA Team Challenge this year and we have 9 national enduance podiums in a row!

Jeff rode an awesome first stint, and after coming in for a splash of fuel during an early caution, he rode for nearly 1.5 hours in 90+ weather.

I rode the last hour and just tried to bring it home in one piece with the tires pretty much spent. I opened up a big gap on RMR's Bryan Bemisderfer and then held the advantage over him and a closing Greg Melka on the Corse Bimota.

We are just done loading and showering and getting ready to head home.

Thanks to all our sponsors, friends, family and crew. You guys rock! More later.

 Barber MOTO-ST Qualifying

We had a two-hour practice and qualifying session this morning. We used the time to sort out gearing and get up to speed with the track. We were on old tires for the whole session and our times showed it. But I think we have a good race set up and we'll be in the hunt tomorrow.

Faith and Addison enjoyed the autograph session. They made their way up and down pit road collecting posters and other swag.

The crew took in the Barber Museum late in the day. Awesome place.

We're going out for fish dinner in Birmingham. More later...

 Live From 'Bama

We're live from Alabama at beautiful Barber Motorsports Park.

We went through MOTO-ST tech, the entrant meeting and set up the pit area. KFC for dinner and now its time to sleep. Alex is picking up Ben from the airport and we're ready to go for practice at 8 AM in the morning.

More tomorrow!

 On the Road to Barber

We are on the road and heading to Barber Motorsports Park for round 4 of the SunTrust MOTO-ST series.

Mike is driving. Alex and Nancy are dozing and John is sleeping in back. Our girls, Faith and Addison are sleeping on the dinette bed.

I'll take over for Mike soon.

Nancy raced tonight in the Harley/Buell Shootout at the Great Lakes Dragaway in Union Grove, Wisc. Unfortunately she red lit in the first round. But she said our fellow Buell racer, friend and crewman Tom Michels won the final aboard his XB "Kelli's Dream!" Way to go Tom and Kelli!!

Anyway, Nancy drove right from the drag races to Mike's and Kelli towed her (mine actually) trailer home.

We should arrive at Barber in Birmingham, Ala. by noon or so tomorrow.

It's Alex's first time in Alabama. Nancy's first time stopping in Alabama. And Mike's first time to Barber. I personally love the track and am looking forward to racing there. I last raced there in 2003.

More later. Maybe...

 Harley-Davidson Museum

The new Harley-Davidson Museum opened this past weekend. Located on 6th and Canal Street in downtown Milwaukee, the H-D Museum houses an amazing collection of Harley-Davidson and Buell motorcycles as well as memorabilia and displays that defy description. Go to www.h-dmuseum.com for more info.

We took the whole family down on opening day and met up with Mike and Nancy for awhile as well. My favorite displays include the Evel Knievel XR750 jumping through the air, the boardtrack racing exhibit and the collection of historic racing motorcycles. Good stuff.

A bonus for me personally is the humbling inclusion of a racing image of me and Shawn Higbee racing side by side through Turn 5 at Road America during the MOTO-ST Road America 500K last year. We went on to finish 1-2 in that race. The photo was taken on the first lap of the race just as I had closed up on Shawn under braking for T5 and tried him on the outside. I'm just ahead of him in the photo, but of course he picked up the pace and started to pull away from me after that. It's a cool image anyway.

The photo is on display in the Cafe Racer restaurant at the Museum, along with images of truly legendary racers like flat track champion Scott Parker on his XR750, superbike racer Pascal Picotte on the VR1000 and even Mr. Erik Buell himself aboard a Harley RR250.

I know. I'm not worthy! But it's still cool...
